Week 25: The Final Week comes to an end...

25 weeks - That is a long time to stay committed to anything - especially a diet plan. I am very proud to say though that not only was I able to make it through, but I exceeded every goal and expectation I set for myself. As you might recall from last week I was at just over 185 pounds and wanted to see how close I actually might get to my overall goal (which I wanted to do by January) of a 100 pounds. It was Thanksgiving week, I was traveling and well.....

At the conclusion on Sunday I weighed in at 179.2 pounds! That's right - over Thanksgiving week of all times - I lost an additional 6 full pounds. That also means that over the course of 25 weeks I have lost a total of exactly 101 pounds!! WOW - I just can't believe it!

Please check back later this week as I am working on a little article to summarize my journey and some tips and tricks that I learned along the way. Until then - thank-you to all of you for your support - it was felt and appreciated.

A Day to Give Thanks...

As I prepare to enjoy this day in the presence of family and friends I felt it appropriate to give thanks for the things I have been blessed with:

I am thankful for...

*My loving wife, who has stood by my side providing the comfort and support that only she can. For more than 12 years she has continued to be the light that guides me through all the dark moments. Over the recent 25 weeks she has been there next to me with her unending love, care & support throughout my journey to regain a healthy lifestyle. Although I could never express in words how truly deep my feelings for her continue to grow, I am certainly thankful above all else that she is with me.

*My father, who provides the knowledge and wisdom to help me through the trying times and the support and love only a father can provide. He is my rock and will always be my best friend through it all.

*My mother, although we have not always been close she still shows her love and concern in the most trying of times. I wish her my deepest blessings of support, love and care as she continues to make the best of her difficult times.

*My family, who has always supported and blessed the things that I have accomplished. With the new-born additions to our family they breathe fresh life into our relationships and offer a glimpse of the innocence that we all have lost along the way.

*My friends, who without them life would be very dull indeed and who make my days feel like they are lived with a sense of meaning and accomplishment.

*My health, it has been front and center for the past 25 weeks and I am thankful for the continued strength to do what is right and to be able to continue my journey to make amends for all the turmoil I have put my body through over the past several years. I am also thankful to be able to continue to move forward with the strength to succeed and accomplish all the goals I have put forth for next year and beyond.

*My job, through the many hardships that are felt around this time of economic crisis I am thankful for the continued support of a company that is sound and true.

Week 24: Just 1 more week to go - What a journey!

Here I am at the end of week 24. My current weight is 185.2 I was able to loose another 3.6 pounds this week and have now lost a combined total of 95 pounds in 24 weeks!!

This week will be the culmination of a very long, and hard process that was very overdue in my life. What a week to end it on too. I am so close to my overall goal of 100 pounds that I am going to push this week like never before. I originally was looking at my birthday in January as a possible end date for my 100 pound goal but I am so very close I am going to see just how close I can get. Of course no challenge would be complete without its obstacles and we have Thanksgiving week of all weeks so that I am now setup to face a very daunting task.

Please keep checking back because I intend to put a nice, detailed article together outlining my journey over the past 25 weeks. I have had so many friends and family ask how I accomplished it and what I did that I felt I should share my story with everyone. I will include the path that I took on this healthy journey, some obstacles I overcome and of course a lot of before and after pictures!!

2009 GOAL Phase 1 of 2: I am Running in theIndy Mini-Marathon on May 2nd, 2009

That's right! I have officially registered in the Indianapolis Mini Marathon on May 2nd, 2009. With all of the success I have had with my recent weight loss and the exercise that I have been consistent with during the past weeks, I wanted to set a goal so that I will continue to work toward maintaining my healthy lifestyle. This Mini-Marathon will be Phase 1 of my 2 part goal.

You will find all the details about the race at the link above. It is 13.1 miles long. I have already started my training and have set some lofty goals. My goal is to turn in a time of 2 hr / 45min or better. This would be an average of 4.76mph or 12:36 / mile. With the mini you must keep a minimum pace of 18min / mile.

And if all goes well I have intentions and plans for Phase 2 to take place in October of 2009 but more on that later....

My Uncle Mark's daughter had her Birthday party today and they rented out a place that had all kinds of large blow-up tents, slides and activities. Juliana was "Princess for a Day" and even the adults had a bunch of fun. Here are few pics of my Aunt and Uncle duking it out with the over sized gloves. Ouch - watch that right hook Cheryl!!

Week 23: Crazy Week - Lots Turned Upside Down

This week was very chaotic. Several things to deal with on a personal side and not much time to make sure I fully committed myself this week. Still I am very proud to post my 23rd consecutive weight loss week: 1.2 pounds lost. Total weight is now 189.6

Rocky has a boo-boo

Our dog Rocky had a blister on the very tip of his nose this week. Poor thing. He kept scratching at it and opening it up so to help prevent him from doing so we had to use a plastic head cone that we got from the vet.

He has to stay in it for about 12 days while we give him medication for it. He is NOT a happy dog right now.

As I mentioned last week, Joe has conceded victory but I am going to continue on for the full 25 weeks. I am happy to report that I have lost an additional 3 pounds this week and now weigh in at 190.8! 90 POUNDS LOST!!

So after 21 weeks I am proud to say that I have successfully won our Family Health Challenge. Week 20 is in the books and we are now 80% done with this challenge!! I can't believe it. I was able to cross another milestone today and finally get under the 200lb mark on the scale. What a terrific feeling!

Last week has been really busy and I have a lot more traveling this week but will try and update you on some recent happenings. Week 19: Soooo Close! Down to 200.8!

I was so close to being under 200 during this weigh-in. The last time I was able to turn the scales below 200 (without cheating) was approx 16 years ago. Just something to work at for this week I guess. For those of you keeping track week-2-week you will interested to know that Joe struggled mightily this week. After working hard at it he was still unable to stop the weight rebound and gained back some of his weight that he loss last week. I am also sad to report that since he left the door of opportunity open, I am now under him in total weight.

If I know him though that will only motivate him even more so I am not calling this thing over yet. As you may have noticed we have had some 40-60 point swings from week to week depending on how the weigh-in comes out. With 6 weeks still to go anything is still possible.

I don't think we have ever taken the time to carve pumpkins so Angela and I wanted to check it off our list. We both designed our own and then of course Rocky had to have one too!

Our Visit to County Line Orchard in Hobart, IN

Angela and I decided to visit the local orchard this weekend. We had beautiful weather on Saturday and was looking for something to do outside.

After a quick 10 minutes we arrived at the County Line Orchard located right here in Hobart, IN. Everybody else had the same idea too because it was packed!

There was plenty to do though with lots of crafts to view and plenty of activities. After sampling the home-made apple and pumpkin doughnuts, we decided to walk a bit of them off so we headed for their corn maze. After boarding the tractor ride we were taken to the 12+ acres of maze cut into the rows of corn.

They handed you a map that contained various clues and questions located throughout the maze. Your job was to locate the markers and collect them all before you exit. Surprisingly the corn was very high and although you would think you would be able to look over and see - you could not. 12 acres is a big place too so we definitely got some exercise.

Afterwords we gathered up some cider, a bunch of apples and headed home. A great day though and we made a note to return soon!

Week 18: 75 pounds lost / 25 more to go!!

Week 18 was a great week for Joe. He has really come back with determination. He nearly grabbed the most weight loss for the week with a 4.4 pound loss. This week for me on the otherhand saw some changes. I was really sick most of the week and the weather is changing which put a change in my exercise routine. No bike riding for the first time in over 10 weeks!

I can't believe that there are less then 7 weeks to go. Even better I have now lost nearly 75 total pounds!! (I still can't believe it.) Final weigh in will probably be on Monday, December the 1st but I will get you more details as it gets closer.

I was able to attend my cousin's wedding over the past weekend. It was really quite a time as Mark and I did the DJ work for the wedding reception. Michael is a great guy and I think the 2 of them are going to do just fine. Good to see all the family again but boy was it a long weekend.

Well after an across the board loss in Week 16 I am afraid to say I gave most of it back this week during the weigh-in. We had to move the weigh-in time to a later time but I don't make any excuses. Good thing was that Joe didn't do much better this week with his.

Getting close to that 200 barrier though on my weight so I am going to keep pushing this forward. Update you soon!

October / Halloween: My favorite month & holiday!

I really love October and especially Halloween. I really can't pin-point exactly why but it is by far my favorite holiday! As many of you know, I have at times been known to get carried away some years. Mark and I have even built our very own Haunted House on 3 different occasions. Sure we told ourselves it was for the neighborhood kids to enjoy but deep inside it was really for us!

As the month goes on I will try to post some pictures of Halloween past and show you guys what a great time you all missed out on! Until my next post - stay safe as the sun goes down!

Week 16: Another week with losses across the board...

Week 16 is now in the books and just 9 more to go! I was able to lower every stat across the board from last week so my point totals reflect that. Joe is starting to ramp up his workout schedule in an effort to keep ahead of me but I have him in my sights :)
(As some of you know I am trying really hard now to be lower then him in weight by the end of this thing and I am now just 10.6 pounds away)

I was really proud of him this week though. We went out Saturday and biked 10 miles together and then did a brisk 3.5 mile walk with some weight training on Sunday. I think if he keeps stuff like that up over the next 9 weeks he will be impossible for me to catch - but overall it will be much better for him. Until next week...

Have you visited such restaurants as Panda Express, Cinnabon, or even Auntie Ann's pretzels while walking around your local mall? I don't know about you but I have had dozens of things from each.

I wanted to pass on a link to an article that I recently stumbled upon that I found pretty interesting. For instance . . .

How many of you Panda lovers have tried their Orange Chicken? I know my hand is raised and often times it was as their Pick 3 (you know 2 of the Orange Chicken and some rice :) Well 1 portion of their Orange Chicken is about 500 calories and 27g fat! If you add in an order of Fried Rice, and you're up to 950 calories and 41g fat! You can do the math for my Pick 3!!

Wow - this thing is moving right along - just 10 weeks left. Joe had a bit of the flu this weekend and was not feeling well. For me though, I am simply tickled pink about my continued results. I have been able to hit every goal so far and am finally getting to the point where I take notice every now and then of how far I have come.

It has not been easy by any stretch of the imagination; and it is not over yet, but I think I really truly believe that it is finally possible to achieve the end goals I have set. I am going to keep pushing hard and will keep you informed!

The waters begin to withdraw and the clean-up is started...

So the rain has stopped and the clean-up has begun. Today on Wednesday is the first day that after the rains stopped early Monday morning that many of the roads have re-opened. In fact, I-80/94 which is a main interstate from Illinois into Indiana was closed nearly 3 days due to the amount of rain and flooding that occurred making commuting traffic from Chicago even worse for most.

For Hobart most of the flooding was due to small rivers, creeks and Lake George swelling from the gathered rain fall. Judging from Joe's I believe that it was was up nearly 12-15' in most places. Here are some of the pictures I have. Some of them were taken from downtown where several business were completely flooded and ruined. Remember to click on them for a larger view.

Week 14: Morning weigh-in and a nice stretch to the lead...

Well the ground was really wet today - just don't know if it was from the excessive rain or Joe's tears after seeing my points lead! We ended up setting the weigh-in early on Sunday morning in anticipation of the coming weather. Downside was that with the weather today I wasn't able to exercise at all before the weigh-in but that just means that my pulse numbers were going to go down just a wee bit from last week (especially since it was morning).

The numbers change drastically in this challenge though so you really can't get comfortable with any size of a lead. 14 weeks down and just 11 to go.

That's right. This guy thought that he could make it and attempted to cross the road (which has risen about 2 feet just since my last post). Of course the emergency personnel had to bring in a boat to attempt the rescue:

There used to be a road here. With it still raining as I type the water is currently nearly 4 feet on top of the road in some spots and still rising.

This is a bait shop owner by the lake. The landing you see is the 2nd level of the house.

My father's pier usually is anchored by poles around it and it usually goes straight out. Water rose so much so fast that it raised up over the poles and came loose. Approx 8 feet rise with more rain still falling and a crest expected nearly 48 hours from now.

Just a quick note for now - going to check to see if the row boat is ready!

Week 13: Recovery week / Still in the lead!

Week 13 is over and I primarily used this week as a recovery week. Over the previous 3 weeks I have really been pushing hard and as a result achieved a 14 pound weight loss in just 3 weeks time. I wanted to give my body a chance to recover a bit and limited my workout sessions this week.

Still kept up enough for a bit over a pound on the weight loss. Joe on the other hand has had a temporary set-back with a small weight loss plateau. I am sure that he will be busting out of it soon though so I intend to keep the pressure applied and get back at it this week! :)

OK All - I need Help with Song Suggestions for my Ipod / Mp3 Player

So it's been a little bit since I started my exercise routine for my health challenge and I need everyone's help. I need suggestions for good songs to load into my Ipod / Mp3 Player.

I don't need the songs themselves just Title and Artist so that I can start to put some "new blood" into my workout songs.

Any genre suggestion is OK (As most know, I listen to everything from Soft Jazz/Classical to Country to Heavy Metal) but it needs to be up tempo. Just not enough motivation to ride/run while listening to a waltz!

Week 12: --- 50 POUNDS LOST ---

Week 12 is officially in the books and I have passed yet another milestone. First let me say that I worked harder this week then any week so far and I am tickled pink to see some benefits to my extra efforts. As you might recall Joe and I had to switch our weigh-in last week to Monday night. This week we weighed in early Sunday morning so we could finish it before we spent the day with the family in town. Tough turn-around time with less then a week this time to post a change in our numbers.

I needed exactly 4 pounds to put me past 50 this week and I was able to muster 5.2! How? Determination! I walked 10.4 miles this week and biked a personal weekly best of 67.6 miles. Add in walking around during 2 Colts games and an entire day at Great America and I was able to use the extra exercise to achieve that next level.

The challenge is now nearly half over and I am now half-way to completing my total weight loss goal of 100 pounds. I am not delusional enough to think that I will keep this pace up and reach my goal by the end of the challenge but I should be at a low enough level to be able to finish the job by early next year. Who knows - maybe my birthday present to myself in January can be the celebration of a hundred pound loss. That would be VERY nice!

Labor Day Holiday with Family

On the Sunday of Labor Day my sister Trisha stopped by my dad's house. Her husband Eric and of course their son Gavin was with as well. It has been a little bit since I have been able to see Gavin and boy was he just a bundle of energy. We spent the day by Joe's pool and then in the afternoon we took out the boat on the lake. Gavin loved to drive the boat with Papa Joe!

Of course later there was time to play with the trains

I think both were having fun :)

Trisha and family drove back Sunday night and my uncle Mark and his family stopped by after their 2nd day at Great America. We cooked tacos for dinner and Mark's kids were able to swim in the pool in the evening. It really was a great time just relaxing and enjoying everyone's company. It isn't that often that we are able to have everyone together and you have to take advantage when you can.

A Day at Six Flags Great America in Chicago!

My Uncle Mark and his family decided to travel this holiday weekend and Angela and I were glad to see that their travel plans included Chicago. They have season passes to Six Flags in St. Louis and decided to take a road trip to visit the Great America park in Chicago. Angela and I drove in Saturday morning to meet them and we all spent the day having fun at the park.

He has a great family and all the kids are a lot of fun. We enjoyed a lot of roller coasters and took some time to see some shows.

After the park closed Angela and I drove home but they stayed to visit the park on Sunday again before we all caught up for dinner at our house on Sunday night.

Week 11: Weigh-In Time Change / New Stats

Week 11 is officially in the books now. Our weigh-in was delayed until Monday night due to some schedule conflicts both Sunday and Monday morning. I think that the odd time for the weigh-in this week is the reason for some of the change in scores. Joe weighed in with his biggest weight loss yet at 3.8 lbs (Told you he wasn't through yet!). Unfortunately his BP #'s were the highest since week 1 dropping his point totals down. On my end my BP was up for the first time in awhile as well but my pulse showed it's true form and recorded in the mid 80's to help some of the point loss. My exercise has pulled through again this week and helped with another 4 pound weight loss.

This next week will be interesting to see how the numbers settle out. With the late weigh-in there will be less time for turn around between now and this Sunday's weigh-in. Plus we have the holiday weekend with family coming in so we'll have to see if that effects the totals at all. Tune in next week to find out!

1st Game at the New Lucas Oil Stadium

Well I was able to see my first game inside the new Lucas Oil Stadium. Terrible preseason game for the Colts vs the Bills with very few bright spots. However I will say that I was really impressed with the new stadium.

Its BIG! It has a seating capacity of 63,000 but can expand up to 70,000. Everything is bigger - the seats, the aisles, the game screens, the outside areas. It is really a great venue.

Another plus I thought was the abundant amount of TVs (even in many creative ways). Plenty of food stands and bathrooms along the outside and the field itself is quite impressive.

For someone that has been watching games in a dome the idea of watching them outside is both an up and down thing for me. Luckily the Lucas Oil Stadium is able to offer both. With the new retractable roof and large side window the stadium opens to provide a comfortable breeze of fresh air (one trick the RCA could have benefited from!)

All-in-all I was impressed with the new Colts home and look forward to getting the season started. Now all we need is #18 to get healthy!!

With yet another annoucement on Friday, eBay has again made sweeping changes to many facets of their online venue. With recent changes in listing structure, search results, listing/insertion fees, and the overall direction of their business model; it is no longer advantageous for us to continue to pay for a store front that continues to get less and less exposure within their new "best match" search engines.

Never fear though - we have plans to make this transition a positive one for our online selling. We will still be keeping our account on eBay open (just closing our e-store section) and will continue to run weekly auctions for both us and our clients.

Here is our game plan to handle the conversion:

1st - Mark and I have been working hard on getting an e-commerce store up and running. It is currently live and lists several products at terrific prices. It will be an ongoing project and our intentions are to continue to grow the product offering so that Stop-N-Buy.com will be a terrific online selling tool for us to list both new and gently used items.

I must say that I watched a lot more of the Olympics this year than I ever thought that I would. If I had to come up with a reason why I could probably sum it up in two words:

Michael Phelps

Mind you that I don't think I have ever even wanted to watch a swimming event from start to finish before, but Phelps accomplishments were so stunning that if you call yourself a sports fan then you had to be curious if he could pull it off. Not only did he deliver but he delivered in dramatic style! With the help of some determined teammates (and their help should not be taken lightly) he has broken so many records it is unbelievable.

There are so many articles about every aspect of his life being written that I could probably post a blog page every day for a few years linking to them but since I have my health challenge going I thought that the most interesting fact I found was this:

According to Chris Chase who writes a sports blog for Yahoo, Phelps " recently said he consumes 12,000 calories per day, or 9,500 more than the FDA recommends for an active, young male."

12,000 a day! WOW! I can already see a future headline:

Week 10: Lowered Every Stat this week, Passed 40 lbs lost, and took the lead!

10 Weeks! The Challenge is 40% done and it is getting tough! Good week this week though so I will enjoy the moment tonight and get back to work at it again on Monday. I had a great week at this stage. I lowered every stat across the board this week - including a 4 lb weight loss. It is getting very tough to shed anything at this point so I will gladly take those results. I am also pleased to report that with this weight loss I have now lost 40 lbs! Great feeling!

After a 7 week streak of being topped by Joe I have finally pulled ahead. Those of you that have been paying attention each week know though that the scores are volatile and are likely to shift several more times before it is over. I saw that look in Joe's eyes tonight and I know he has a big points push left in him. This one is going to go down to the wire - trust me.

WOW! Joe and I Raced in the Richard Petty Nascar Driving Experience Today!!!

Richard Petty Experience - 8/15/08

How cool was today? On a scale of 1-10 about a 13! I went with my Dad and Linda to watch Joe participate in the Driving Experience sponsored by All Tile Distributing. Imagine my excitement when an extra spot was made available due to a last minute cancellation. Let me just say one thing - WWWOOOOWWWW!

Ok - so here is a rundown on today's schedule:

We arrived at the track about 11:30. The event was held at the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, IL. After pulling down through Gate 5 we were able to drive right under turn 3 to get to the infield. Of course at this moment I was ready to just observe but little did I know what was in store for me today....

All Tile was host to approx 30 wide-eye drivers and while we waited for everyone's arrival we were allowed to walk around and get a real good close up of the 4 cars we would soon be strapped down in. As soon as everyone was there we were treated to a lunch in the Chicagoland Media pavilion and awaited further instructions.

Approx 12:45pm I was given the terrific news that a spot had opened up and that my number was called. I did not even dream of being able to participate but once given the chance it didn't take long for me to fill out and initial the 3 page release form (Yep, it was about 3 pages :) and quickly get fitted for my racing firesuit. After a few publicity shots Joe and I made our way into the first driver's meeting to start our instructions.

After a quick initial driver's meeting it was outside again to get familiar with the cars and the track. We started by going over the car. Our instructor explained the instrument panel, emergency procedures, and basic operation of the vehicle.

After our car orientation we were offered a ride in the Petty Van to get an overview of the track and direction on how to drive the track. They were very thorough and explained the nuances of the track. It was a lot to take in - especially when your heart is going a hundred beats a minute in anticipation of getting things started.

Finally we attended our final drivers meeting. They reviewed our instructions and gave us communication information. No radios so you had to learn the flag system they used when you passed by the start finish line. Pretty straight forward and once we were comfortable we were ready to get racing!

In addition to the regular driving experience, they had a few other things available. Joe and I decided that we also wanted to participate in the Ride-Along experience so after our initial instruction we headed over to this area first and purchased the additional tickets.

In the ride along, you get to sit beside an experienced Petty driver in a true COT (Car of Today/Tomorrow) and they take you around the track closer to max speed then you would get driving by yourself. It was a great experience because 1) it helped ease the pre-race jitters by letting you feel a faster ride then you would drive and 2) it gave you a bird's eye view of how to truly drive the track. During the ride along you travel 4 laps (3 at speed) at approx 165-168 mph (Chicagoland's Track qualifying record: Jimmie Johnson 188.147 mph). First off, I am tremendously happy that I have already lost the weight that I did because the G-Force that you feel inside the car is completely unexpected. Secondly, anybody that contends that these Nascar drivers are not athletes need to do this experience. It is really unbelievable and I have an even deeper appreciation for what the Nascar drivers do on a weekly basis.

Next on the schedule was what we were all waiting for: The Driving Experience. The Richard Petty School has several program levels and for ours "The Rookie Experience" what it meant for us was to be strapped in our own Nascar Car and be able to follow behind an experienced driver (basically shadowing their line around the track). As you got comfortable and sped up the pace car in front of you increased their speed and away you go. 8 full laps (and they of course went by way to fast) were yours to run. If you run the laps correctly you have the potential on this experience to run between 140-145 mph. For those that think that doesn't sound too fast, try strapping in with over 600 hp at your fingertips out on a high banked track all by yourself and then tell me if you still think it isn't that fast.

So what were the final results? Well there were roughly 30 drivers and the winning speed was just over 141 mph. I am happy to announce I was in the top 5 with a top speed of 139.05 mph. (Hey the 2007 race winner Tony Stewart's average speed was 134.258 mph!) Unfortunately I must report that Joe turned in a top speed of just over 129 mph. Do you think I should let him live that down? (Neither do I :)

As you can probably tell - it was truly a unique and wonderful experience! I highly recommend it if you get the chance! As always click on the pics for a larger version and if you want: hover your mouse over the pic for a description of what you are looking at.

The Fattest States in 2008 - And the Winner (uh loser) is...

I found this article very interesting. It is an article from CalorieLab (A helpful website for calculating calories of your food). It shows by state the percentage of residents that rank as obese.

According to their research Mississippi ranks #1 for the 3rd consecutive year. Looks like Indiana ranks #9 under the 3 year average so maybe I am doing my part to help bring them down the next time!

Probably the scariest stat that I see on their chart is the fact that the lowest % of people overweight or obese in 2007 was 55.7 in Colorado! 55.7% was the lowest!! Holy Cow we are a fat country!

Update: The Harry Potter Movie: The Half-Blood Prince will be delayed until 7/17/09!

Back on July 29th I posted an article about The New Harry Potter movie. Unfortunately Warner Bros has announced today that they will postpone the opening of the film for nearly 8 months so that their 2009 summer movie schedule can now include The Half-Blood Prince.

Good news (at least for right now) is that the 2 part 7th movie has not been effected by this change and Part 1 is still slated for November of 2010.

A New Edition to the Palmer Family: Hayden Michael Palmer

Cubs vs Cards - Another Game @ Wrigley!

Wow! 3 Cubs games so far this year!

Joe and I were able to see the Cubs vs White Sox back on June 21st (Cubs won 11-7). See Pic Below

Then I was able to be lucky enough to see them play the Marlins at My 1st Rooftop Game. Now I was able to go back and watch them play their rivals - The St. Louis Cardinals!

Unfortunately the game I saw - Saturday, Aug 9th - was the day they lost 3-12 but the seats were still great! Originally I was planning on attending with Mark (see Blog the Info!) but something came up that prevented him from going. Instead I went with someone that I work with and we had just a terrific time! (Sorry Mark!)

Working on trying to maybe get to one more game. (This one may be away from Wrigley Field) I really think this is a magical season this year and I am trying to be able to say I was there during the season that history was made.

Sunday Trip: Grand Haven, Michigan - Corn Boil

Angela and I headed up to her father's house in Grand Haven, MI. Bob and Jan have about 10 acres on a wonderful country site and every year they have local friends over for an annual corn boil.

He has a large garden where he grows several items and the sweet corn was very good! Everybody that came brought a dish to pass and it made for a very pleasant afternoon filled with great food and conversation. The group was a wonderful bunch of people and many new friends were made. We are looking at returning very soon so that we can spend a bit more time taking in some of the local sites.

Week 9: My 1st Plateau & My Personal Best - DOH!

Week 9 is now in the books and it looks like I have reached my first weight loss plateau. Honestly I must admit, I expected it earlier. Anybody who has attempted a long term weight loss should be very familiar with these situations. The human body is a wonderfully efficient machine and will often adapt quickly to whatever changes you are making. Unfortunately that means that you have to occasionally change things up if you want to see continued results.

Case in point this week:
This week I maintained my average daily calorie intake to within 78 calories of the previous weeks AND had my largest exercise activity to date. I biked more than 38 miles and walked/jogged more than 16 this week!! All this activity and I had a net weight loss of just a single pound (Which was water weight walked off the morning of the weigh-in). I am sure that there was some muscle mass built up and they always say that should weigh more than fat so maybe that is partly true. However after doing a lot of research on the "plateau" phenomenon I have realized that there is indeed a real issue with this. It seems that the body becomes so efficient with a routine that it actually will start using less calories after a short repetition then it did when you started. Therefore after a few weeks of consistent treadmill activity you are actually burning off fewer calories than the first time you started. The fix? Mix-up your routine and keep at it!

So I just got an email with a picture that shows an approximate view from our new Colts Season tickets! Time to get excited - preseason has started and the 1st regular season game vs the Chicago Bears is September 7th!

Looks like I will be able to visit the new Lucas Oil Stadium before the 1st Home Preseason game during a special Season Ticket Holder Meet/Greet. I will let you know what it is like and make sure to take plenty of pics!

Week 8 is in the books and we are almost a third through this competition. I have been able to stay on track with my weight loss and am happy to report that this is my 8th consecutive week of weight loss. Overall my point totals are right where I want them. As some have noticed my pulse numbers have been higher lately during the weigh-in periods. Never fear supporters - sometimes it is all how you play the game. Remember - the last week's totals are the most important ;)

New Harry Potter Book: The Tales of Beedle the Bard 12/4/08

JK Rowling is going to release "The Tales of Beedle the Bard" for sale! As some of the Harry Potter Fans might know, in December of 2007 JK created 7 hand-written copies and 1 was publicly auctioned off. It was later revealed that the famous bidder was none other than Amazon (who won with a bid of £1.95 million / $4 million). The money went to charity but to this day no other copies have been published.

That is until now! On December 4th, 2008, they are going to release it. There will be the standard edition that I have pictured in the top left and Amazon is also releasing a collector's edition (maximum of 100,000 copies) that closely resembles the original hand-made ones.

The book contains 5 stories including the famous "The Tale of the Three Brothers" that plays an important role in the final Harry Potter book. They will also feature additional commentary on each fairy tale from Professor Dumbledore and an introduction by J K Rowling. All net proceeds from the sale of the books will be donated to The Children's High Level Group, the English charity co-founded by J K Rowling and Emma Nicholson MEP to help children suffering in institutions.

Friday Night: Valparaiso 49er Drive In - Dark Knight & Hellboy II

We returned to the 49er Drive-In Friday Night to see a great double feature. Playing this week is the Dark Knight and Hellboy II. To read about our 1st visit to the 49er Click Here.

As you all know Angela and I saw the Dark Knight on IMAX over the opening weekend and just loved it. Certainly didn't mind seeing it again. The 2nd feature this time was Hellboy II.

We arrived early this time and enjoyed some Trivial Pursuit and played some cards before the movie started. As always Rocky enjoyed the show too!

Some of you asked about the pictures last time so I included a couple of shots this time of what we include in the van. Of course we go all out and as you can see the essentials of a good drive-in movie are there: Viewing area outside with area rug, chairs and table and of course a comfortable bed in the back of the van complete with stereo surround speakers (up to 5 now I think), a fan, and plenty of pillows and blankets for the cool nights. The 49er has a wonderful concession stand that has a great variety and everything is reasonably priced. We like to arrive early and have a snack and enjoy some board games. For those that asked, we do utilize a secondary battery source so we don't drain the battery from the van. Like I said before: we like our Drive-Ins!

For those that don't know - Angela and I are big Harry Potter fans. Some might think that this is a "kids book" series but I strongly disagree. We have both read all 7 books and watched all the movies and I have completely enjoyed them. In fact we even went to the midnight book party for the 7th book and was up all night reading it - but that's for another blog post sometime. Yes, I even have pictures from it :)

I highly recommend the books as you will get a much more complete story but the movies have been fairly consistent with the inclusion of most of the major story lines. Judging simply from this 1st trailer I don't think this one will disappoint either. Enjoy!

I purchased gas today for $3.38/gal - Can't believe I was excited...

Wow! How much have we been brain-washed when it feels good to fill up for $3.38/gallon. That's just terrible!

According to AAA - the national average for Unleaded regular for 7/29/08 was $3.941. I was in Springfield, MO this morning and filled up at a QT station for $3.38. Was kind of nice to be on the low end of the spectrum for a change but isn't it odd how we now feel good about gas below $3.50? After an extended time of above $4 I guess that is what we get.

Week 7: 30 Total lbs Lost - And the Point Gap is Closing...

Week 7 is in the books and I am excited to now have lost 30 pounds. Joe's totals averaged out this week as I expected and as you can see the point gap has narrowed considerably since last week. As many of you know, Angela and I participated in a diet program called Seattle Sutton's Heathly Eating about 2 years ago. After about 10-11 weeks on that I went from 272 to 245. More weight loss here in less time and no fad diet to go off of and yo-yo back again. As I have been telling everyone that has been asking me so far - I am NOT on a diet - just living a better lifestyle. :)

All Tile Cubs Game Today - My 1st Time at 3639 Wrigley Rooftop!

My 1st time ever to party on one of the rooftops at Wrigley and was it ever a blast. I was fortunate enough to be invited to the 3639 Rooftop at Wrigley. I have watched several games at Wrigley but I must say that the rooftop experience is quite unique and if you should ever get the chance the 3639 Rooftop is a Premium place!

The company I work for sells our products through All Tile Inc (a Midwest flooring distributor). They entertained several of their customers and vendors today on the 3639 Wrigley Field Rooftop watching the Cubs vs Marlins.

Unfortunately the Cubs lost to the Marlins today by a score of 3-2 but it was still a great time nonetheless. We even received a bonus today and was able to see Notre Dame Alum Jeff Samardzija make his major league debut with the Cubs!

This place was truly 1st class all the way. It had three viewing levels: an inside air-conditioned viewing area, an open air table/chair sitting area and a third level that contained a stadium seating section. Each level came complete with a bar and a never-ending supply of food and fun in the sun. They even had a large grill on the top level that served up some wonderful looking items. Of course your normal ballgame fare was available: hot dogs, cheeseburgers, and brats; but they also had salad, chicken sandwiches, beef sandwiches, philly steaks, cookies, several choices of ice cream, cupcakes, pizza and much more that I am probably forgetting. Let's put it this way - it was a terrible day of torture while trying to stick to my new healthy eating plan. (I must admit though that I did sample 2 of the home-made chocolate chip cookies!)

I was really surprised by the view too! You would think that it would seem very far away from the field but it was surprising that the site lines almost looked as if you were right there part of Wrigley. These photos on the left and right were taken on my phone from my seat.

First, my blog is made up of various articles. The articles themselves can be read on the left side of the screen and the right side is saved for various slideshows, polls, and other neat things. If you are reading an article and would like to send a comment simply scroll down to the end of that article and you will find a link to the comments. (It might have 0 or a 100 comments just depends on all of you). Here is what the link looks like:

Brad meets Barack Obama - too cool!

Yet another benefit of this blog was that I was finally able to touch base with my brother Brad. As many of you know, Brad and I have been very close friends from practically birth and I consider him a brother even to this day. One of the downsides of growing old and growing apart is that after people go separate ways it is harder and harder to stay in touch. I was really tickled pink to get his email.

He is currently on security detail working various appointments in and around Iraq. Due to the nature of his assignments it isn't often that I get to hear about a lot of them so when he recently sent me some photos I was eager to see what he had been doing. I had to look twice at the photos he sent but sure enough it is none other than Barack Obama with the guys. Not bad to be on assignment with and meet/greet the possible next leader of the free world.

Riding Along the Oak Savannah Trail

Angela and I have been starting to bike ride again. We really are lucky to live where we do since there are some of the nicer bike trails in Indiana within just a short distance of our house.

The Oak Savannah Trail starts just south of our house and continues for just over 7 miles towards Griffith, IN. It is a very nice stretch of paved trail that provides wonderful scenery and protection from vehicles at the same time. Our initial goal is to be able to bike all the way to the end of the trail and back again.

There is also the option of following a partial trail through the town of Hobart to the start of another Indiana trail called the Prairie Duneland Trail. At some point we hope to try this one out as well. It's about a 2.5 mile ride to get to the start of it through downtown Hobart. Once there the trail continues for over 10 miles and you can even make connections to 2 more additional trails.

Eventually the plans are to have all of the segments connected and to have one large path connecting Northwest Indiana. That will be very nice when it happens but for now it is still a plus to have such a wonderful opportunity so close to home.

Dark Knight on IMAX - Heath Ledger LENGENDARY!!

So Angela and I got up early on Sunday and went to see the Dark Knight movie on IMAX. 9:15am start time which was probably earlier then I have ever seen a movie, but WOW was it worth it!!

If you have a chance to see this I highly recommend it. I felt it truly was unlike any other comic book based movie in the fact that this one really tried to make it as realistic as possible. I have so thoroughly enjoyed the re-making of this series starting with Batman Begins. The IMAX shows were sold out for every show but the earliest one so that is why we went at that time. Good thing too!! When we came out of the show there were a TON of people waiting to see it!

The show itself lived up to all the hype and more for me. Heath Ledger's performance was truly legendary! I have never seen the Joker played so well and so true to character. I am deeply sad that with his passing we will not get another performance because I would have paid a lot more to see him in this role again. What's more - he has set the bar so high that I would find it very hard to believe anyone else can come close to being in the same league with his performance. I was also thrilled that they finally gave us a movie that was true to life and very realistic. I hated the earlier attempts that almost had too much of a cartoonish feel to them and I felt ultimately hurt the Batman story line. I mean come on, who really sees Arnold as Mr. Freeze?

So in the end - 2 thumbs way, way up! Angela and I are looking to return to the drive-in soon so I'll have to let you know what else we end up seeing this summer.

BTW - if you have kids and were wondering if you should take them to this movie - I would suggest an age limit would be in order. This is not your Adam West's Batman.

Week 6 - Dramatic Changes / Some Good / Some Bad

Week 6 ends and the numbers are a bit deceiving this week. Joe was not feeling well this weekend and I think due to the BP medicine had some extra low BP stats during our weigh-in time. After checking with him on Monday morning though he seems to be feeling better. Anywho his scores will average out next week and should bring us closer together again.
On my end - 6th week in a row for weight loss. Base BP and Pulse rates have dropped vs the start too so I guess things are working. Like anything though - to see great results takes sheer determination. Thanks for everyones support as I move ahead!

I cover a sales territory of approx 14 mid-western states and am always meeting new and exciting people. It is tremendously refreshing to represent such a wonderfully design driven company and I truly enjoy getting up and going to work each and everyday.

So since my last post was about our recent trip to our new find: The 49er Drive-In! I found it ironic that I would run across this article about the 6 worst foods to eat at the Movies. I am sure all of us out there have had some of these too!

Want a real eye opener? The lowest calorie count on their featured items is 572 calories. For a 200lb middle age man he would have to do one of the following to work off that many calories:

Valparaiso 49er Drive-In Night! Great Fun had by All!!

After living here for awhile we were surprised to find out that we never realized that we had such a quality movie drive-in right by us. Once we found out though we HAD to go! Angela and I just love drive-in movies and as you can see by the pics below - we go all out!

We even got a bonus for our first go around and had Joe & Linda go with us. Of course we had to have our kids go with too. Our beloved Rocky had his friends Roxie and new family member Colbie go along and enjoy it with us. What a great time!

It was the 49er Drive-In in Valparaiso, IN and we saw the double feature of Hancock (with Will Smith) and Wanted (with Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie).

Another great week - mostly unexpected on the weight loss. 2nd largest week yet with 5.8lbs. Mostly looking for around 2 lbs / week at this point so I am very pleased with my results. Joe is doing really well though and putting up a great fight. I am really proud of him and think that this will be very beneficial for both of us in the long run. He had his biggest weight loss week this week and has been able to maintain his blood pressures and pulse right where they need to be.

Well Week 3 is in the books and I think I can tell they have been adjusting Joe's medication. He was able to significantly reduce his BP's this week. I am happy for his health but I have got to tell you that he posted some big points this week...

Weight loss this week was my biggest yet: 5.9lbs to put me at a total of 265.5 Always easier in the beginning though so I am focused to keep it coming off - especially with the holiday around the corner.

eBay Live 2008 - Chicago

As many of you know Angela and I have been selling on eBay off an on for awhile. I would love to spend more time dedicated to our online business in general but have been a little unsure of all the changes going on.

Whatever we decide to do as far as our online sales for this fall, we figured we would at least visit the big eBay Live since it was being hosted in Chicago this year. Although it was far less crowded then I would have expected, I did find several of the seminars extremely informative.

When I have some more time later I will have to let you know what I think about their new direction. Have mixed feelings about it either way.

Angela and I wanted to wait out some Friday Chicago traffic so we decided to eat downtown at Buca di Beppo. Terrific place and I highly recommend if you like Italian! (http://www.bucadibeppo.com)

Well week 1 is in the books and I am pleased to announce that I weighed in at 275 and have lost 5.2 lbs. Ultimately I am really trying to reach 200 by next January. Haven't been below the double century mark since my first year in college.

With BP and Pulse numbers likely to change by bigger multiples the numbers are sure to fluctuate from week to week. Ultimately it is the one who can lower the most consistently that will end up pulling this thing off.

Our Buddy Dameon Gets to Visit!

What a great weekend we had spending it with our little buddy Dameon! He is Angela's brother Chris's grandson and we were tickled pink that he was able to come over to our house for the weekend and visit.

He is a terrific kid who is extremely sharp for his age. He loves dinosaurs (and knows them by name), Spider-man and especially loved the outdoors.

So what did we have planned for the weekend?

Well you know I couldn't disappoint the little guy so on the day that he arrived I rented one of the big blow-up Moon Palace jump things and we all had fun jumping in it.

The thing would hold up to 6 adults so of course Angela and I had to get in it try it out. Soon all of the neighborhood kids took notice and we even let them come over and jump for a bit.

After the jumping was over it made a perfect dinosaur pit so Dameon and I got down to business and made sure our Dinosaurs and snakes got plenty of time to stretch their legs.

Plus plenty of time this weekend to camp out in the tent, ride the waverunner for the first time, swim in the pool, open up presents and much, much more.

A LOT of fun was had and we hope he is able to come back real soon!

The Official Father / Son Health Challenge Begins

As some of you know, my father recently was hospitalized. I am very thankful he is back home with us enjoying life, but his recent troubles have made me take some time to reflect on the sorry shape that I have allowed myself get into.

I have always had weight gains and losses throughout my life but I have finally decided to put the foot down and change to a more healthy lifestyle. Enough is enough. Shortly before our 1st move to San Antonio, Angela and I committed to Seattle Sutton (weight loss diet plan with prepared food) and both loss a good amount of weight. At the time I started I had ballooned up to a ghastly 272 lbs. After about 4 months I had reduced my weight to 245 and Angela lost even more as an overall percentage. Unfortunately it was a bit expensive for us at the time and since there was no local franchise in TX I eventually got back to my old habits. Well almost 4 years later I am embarrased to say that my weight has again topped an all time high of 280 lbs. It is time to get serious.

So since my dad had to change his lifestyle a bit I figured it was a perfect time to get us both on the right track to a healthy lifestyle. So here is what we have done:

25 weeks long
Total Points earned by a percentage reduction from week to week in these areas:
Weight Loss, Blood Pressure & Pulse.
After 25 weeks the winner will be the largest total reduction and...
The Loser will pay for a season's worth of Colts tickets for the winner!

Wish me good luck - it will be a long road ahead to change some terrible habits.
